Performance Management

What is Performance Management

Michael Armstrong have defined performance management is a strategic and integrated approach to delivering sustained success to organizations by improving the performance of the people who work in them and by developing the capabilities of teams and individual contributors.

According to Pointon and Ryan, Performance management  has formed a key activity for managers and management in the quest to increase the benefits gained by the application of labour power.

Principles of Performance Management

  • It translates corporate goals into individual, team, department and divisional goals.
  • It helps to clarify corporate goals.
  • It is a continuous and evolutionary process, in which performance improves over time.
  • It relies on consensus and co-operation rather than control or coercion.
  • It creates a shared understanding of what is required to improve performance and how it will be achieved.
  • It encourages self-management of individual performance.

Planning for Performance Management

Set goals and expectations - The first thing need to do is layout exactly what you expect of  employees and set goals for them to achieve.

Set regular check-ups - It does no good to set goals and expectations if do not regular check-ups to ensure that progress is being made. Need to have performance reviews at regular intervals so you both can make adjustments as needed.

Assess performance - The whole purpose of an employee performance review is to determine exactly how the employee has performed in comparison to the goals you set up.

  3. Nice article Thamasha I would like to add that Performance management is very important for an organization to identify future leaders. An organization can minimize the gap between the organization's skill requirements and what an employee is able to deliver in his/ her capacity; thus, it will be beneficial for succession planning as well.
